Tennis news – Caroline Wozniacki seeded No. 1 for the U.S. Open
Withdrawal of Serena Williams from the U.S. Open has made the Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki top women’s seed on Monday for the U.S. Open 2010, which begins on the 31th August in New York City.
Caroline Wozniacki has won nine career titles, and was the runner-up at Flushing Meadows last year. She is the first woman who is seeded no.1 for the U.S. Open since 2003 although without having won a major championship. Wozniacki comes at no.2 after Serena Williams who pulled out of the event due to the injury.
Belgian defending professional tennis star Kim Clijsters was seeded No.2 last Monday. The American star Venus Williams who is 2000-01 U.S. Open champion is seeded No.3 this  season. 2008 runner-up Jelena Jankovic and Samantha Stosur are also in the top list.
Venus on last Tuesday said, “I’m ready for the U.S. Open. I had a tough summer, with some bad luck with my leg, but I am all ready now.”
Two more tennis stars who were seeded No.11 and No.14 last Monday are Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova.
Serena Williams pulled out last week, saying that she is still recovering from the surgery on her foot, which gave chance to Caroline to become No.1 seed.
In another tennis festival, the 20-year-old Caroline Wozniacki won the rain-delayed Roger’s Cup 2010 and became the winner of US$ 2 Million first time in Montreal last Monday. Wazniacki very skilfully beat the Russian eight-seeded tennis star Vera Zvonareva. She has also won the championship at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and also in her home city Copenhagen. Wazniacki ground strokes are really famous as they hit the ground with great sharpness.
In an interview, Caroline Wazniacki told the press that absence of Serena Williams in U.S. Open is not a cause of mounting pressure. She says that it’s a regular feeling before any match and she is all ready to play in New York. The tennis star said, “If I win that would be the perfect thing in fact. You know seed is just the number on the court. You still have the same opponents and everything. I just want to beat every single girl that is in my way. It doesn’t really matter to me if I am first seed or second seed but it is extra-special for me to win the Grand Slam.”
Previously, Caroline Wozniacki was No.1 seed at the Danish Open 2001. The tournament was exclusively held due to the popularity of Caroline Wozniacki in Denmark. As usual Wozniacki gave her best in the tournament and lived to the expectations of her Danish fans.
There have been difficulties and hurdles in Wozniacki’s career as the defending champion; she lost early at AEGON International which was her first grass court tournament of the year and was seeded No.3 at Wimbledon Championship 2010. In the first rounds, she defeated Tathiana Garbin, Chang Kai-chen and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. However, she was badly defeated in the fourth round by Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-0.
Caroline has a very passive style of play; she is considered to be a very defensive player and wins numerous points by pushing opponent’s errors and running down balls. She is also known as “pusher” because of her unique style of playing. Caroline has shown great improvement as she has become more aggressive with her play. She works a lot on her forehand, and is blessed with natural expert backhand. She can perform above-average on all type of surfaces. The best part is her strength, which brought her to the finals of U.S. Open. And due to all these good qualities, the eyes of Danish tennis fans are on this emerging star.
