Tennis news: Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals
The Australian tennis player Jurgen Melzer and German tennis ace Philipp Petzschner have qualified for the year-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, which is going to be held in London from November 21 to November 28, 2010.  The German- Australian duo joins the world’s top two doubles pairs, Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan as well as Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor, as the first three teams who managed to successfully qualify for the doubles competition.
Petzschner and Melzer are currently ranked number seven in the 2010 doubles team ranking by the Association of tennis professionals. However, they have still confirmed their appearance in London as a result of their Wimbledon major trophy, combined with a secured finish inside the top twenty in the world.
The pair’s qualification is ensured after the Bryan brothers won their United States Open doubles final after dismissing Aisam- Ul- Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopana in a total of two sets. The Pakistani- Indian duo were the only threat to the grass court Grand Slam doubles winner, however, the loss for Aisam and Rohan in New York at last confirmed qualification for Jurgen and Petzschner irrespective of whether the duo finish inside the top eight of the ATP world doubles ranking this year or not.
The other major winning teams this season include the Bryan brothers who won the Australian Open tennis tournament and the United States Open tennis competition along with Zimonjic/ Nestor who triumphed at the Roland Garros have already qualified as a result of their secured finishes inside the top eight.
After successful qualification, the Australian tennis player, Melzer is looking forward to make history by registering his name as the first man to qualify in both doubles and singles simultaneously at the year-ending competition since Emilio Sanchez back in 1990.
“To qualify for the year-ending event which is going to take place in London, is one of the best things for me. It feels great that I have already qualified for the doubles contest and really hoping to play well out there. Obviously, it would be amazing for me if I manage to qualify in the singles and the doubles; it is going to be a big achievement without any question. If a player manages to qualify in both the singles as well as doubles, it implies that he has had one h**l of a year,” said the world number one Australian.
Apart from Jurgen and Philipp, Roger Federer as well as Rafael Nadal have also qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2010.
