Tennis news - Kim Clijsters looks strong to defend her title in New York
The Belgian tennis veteran Kim Clijsters has started her campaign of defending her Grand Slam title of the US Open in a victorious way. The current world number 3 is sailing smooth and she is showing all her hunger for this year’s title as well.
The match was quite exciting and full of action, as the veteran Belgian outclassed her rival to clutch a hammering victory against the Greta Arn from Hungary. It was a two-setter match which was won by the former world number 1 by 6-0 7-5. The first set of the match came to be a very easy set for Kim but in the second set she lost a bit of concentration and paved a way for the opponent to make a comeback in the match, which she does pretty brilliantly. Greta Arn showed her talent and dedication and gave some tough time to Kim but it was Kim’s experience and sheer elegance that made her success sensationally. The 31-year-old Arn saved the first break point after a long stamina jolting rally but failed to save that for the second time as the world number three Clijsters was attacking Arn quite remarkably. The match entered into a very exciting stage when the score went to 6-5 in the second set. Arn showed her dedication by saving two match points but it was not a lucky day for her as her veteran opponent outclassed her with her merciless aggressive shots.
The recent victory was fifteenth victory of Kim at the Flashing Meadows, and it seems like she is unstoppable. It is also to be remembered that Kim got retired from the international tennis circuit for almost two years and made a return in 2009. Her return to the tennis circuit was not less than a shocker for the world, as she was able to grasp the US Grand Slam title after making a strong comeback. After winning the match on Monday, Clijsters seemed pretty relaxed while expressing her views to the media and said that the match was a good match for her, as it has given her much confidence for the upcoming matches. While talking about her performance in the match she said that she is not very happy with the way she has performed as at one moment of the match she was down a double break. She added that she should play more aggressively and has to focus over the perfection of her shots.
In the other matches of the day, the tennis sensation from Italy Francesca Schiavone thrashed her Japanese rival Ayumi Morita very convincingly by 6-1 6-0. It was a very easy match for the Italian, as she proved to be a bit too much to handle for her rival. Despite of the fact that the 58 minute match was not a tough challenge for Schiavone, it certainly raised her confidence level for the tournament. It is also to be remembered that Francesca Schiavone is the winner of this year’s French Open tennis championship and her ability of creating marvels in the tennis court cannot be ignored. After winning the match the French veteran expressed her views pretty calmly and told the media that she is trying to give her full and hoping for the best in the future matches. Later she added that it is very hard to make a strong comeback but she is trying her level best to improve her game and make her way up to the top. She told the media that she has a hope of clutching each and every desired target, as she has worked hard and will use all her magnificent experience.
The biggest tennis tournament is still on and players are making their ways successfully to the second round.
