Tennis news: Roger Federer beats Jurgen Melzer to reach US Open quarters
New York U.S Open has brought one more straight set terrific success of Roger Federer on Monday night. This result encourages Roger Federer to prepare to rematch Robin Soderling.
This Monday night appeared fortunate for Roger Federer, as he thrashed Australian 13th-seeded Jurgen Melzer with 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3. This victory entered Federer to the 26th consecutive Grand Slam tournament’s quarterfinals and set-up an exciting contest. Now Federer will play against number 5 Robin Soderling, the man who completed his stripe of 23 successive Grand Slam semi-finals with a distress in recent French Open quarterfinals.
While expressing his view point about the upcoming challenge, Federer said that Robin Soderling is one of the dangerous players, and this will surely be a tough match for him to win. On Monday night famous celebrities like Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale were sitting in his guest box. Before that other eminent personalities like Cameron Diaz and Alex Rodriguez who is New York Yankees 3rd baseman were also seen. Federer played splendidly with 41 wins and fascinated the crowd well. Federer also shook hands with Rodriguez for the first time before leaving the court. Federer was quite happy and told the crowd that he didn’t permit his opponent to win any set. Just playing for a good result was never his only concern; he loves to play wonderful whenever he enters in court. Sometimes the opponents make it hard and play surprisingly well, he further added.
To get some extra support, Federer took assistance from the net in the second-set tiebreaker, double beating balls that strike the tape and dropped over to end points. It's a misfortune for me that I even didn't win a single sit, Melzer said. He considered himself deserving for the second set win and for semi-finals too, as he was one of the dangerous players. One couldn't be luckier than him in a tiebreaker.
Federer scored the first net cord point of 1-1 through forehand approach shot. Before falling on the ground, the ball swung on the top of the net for a while. Melzer showed the signs of great disappointment by throwing his head back. Second set was tough for both players but finally went to Federer. When Federer striked a cross-court forehand winner to secure the tiebreaker, he yelled, "Come on!" At the same time Melzer looked at his associates and shouted, too. He later said that he is not happy because this match was not at all lucky for him, tiebreakers are always critical, and Federer was lucky to get them.
Melzer tried his best to recover during the third set. He opened set with broke serve but Federer was right back in no time and soon took the lead by 4-2. Sixteen Grand Slam championships winner Roger Federer knows Melzer for more than ten years. They have even played together some double matches in juniors’ tournaments. This summer at Wimbledon, they faced each other first time in a professional manner. In that contest, players continued for the 4th round and Federer grasped victory in straight sets at the end. Robin Soderling who has beaten Spanish Albert Montanes by 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 will now give a tough challenge to Federer.
Soderling got energetic while speaking to the crowd, and said that he always waited for the best and challenging matches of the tournaments. It is always his dream to play against champions, as he has practiced and trained for the best contests. This match will give him real fun.
Comparing Federer’s previous matches against Soderling, we found that among the 12 matches played, Federer lost just one match. Before losing this match recently on 1st June, he won 117 consecutive matches. Federer stood victor in 44 matches out of the last 45 matches played at the US Open.
Now Soderling is planning to defeat Federer to make the tournament dramatic. He was confident in his last speech and said that he played with Federer many times and he knows him well. He will attempt all possible ways to win from Federer, Soderling stated.
