Question:

Tennis pains - any ideas?

I enjoy playing tennis and without being arrogant, I'm clearly the best of my mates.

I have considered having lessons and taking it further, however, every time I play, I wear an elbow support and experience pains all the way up my arm, from the wrist to the shoulder, these pains can last up to a week, then I'm normally fine to play again the following weekend say.

I've seen my gp and he tells me to take anti inflammatary tablets and/or muscle rub. I've tried these but it doesn't stop the pain.

Could anybody advise me further as I am limited in how often I play because of this and I normally have a weaker 3rd set and don't serve so hard as I feel the pain starting.

Thanks!

  1. Wow....pretty huge question!  I will give it my best shot....

Sounds like tennis elbow all the way and here are the major causes:

    Poor technique and form

Grip size to small or to large

Racquet to light or could be to heavy...usually to light is the cause

    String tension to tight

Frame is to stiff for you

  2. Tennis elbow is often the result of poor form.  I would recommend taking a lesson to get the motions right.

  3. That sounds horrible. I would look for a specialist in sports injury and check my form of playing carefully; maybe you are doing something you are not supposed to.

  4. Tennis elbow can cause pain along the whole arm, though it's point of injury is the elbow. But it could be wrist problems also.

If it's tennis elbow, then the the main problem is not having the arm straight at point of ball contact when serving.A bent arm means stress on the elbow ligaments.People bend their arms as you can generate more power.Keep the arm straight and the whole arm takes the strain. If it's wrist trouble, than use a thicker handle as the wrist does not twist so much. With both injuries it is advisable to use light raquets ie less than 300grammes.So..light raquet, straight arm and thicker handle should help
