Tennis question (seeding)?

In tennis, the announcers keep talking about how someone is, say, #3 in the world, but #2 seed. What's the difference? For example, Kuznetsova is ranked #4 in the world, but is seeded at #3. Does this have something to do with who else is playing that particular tournament? Thanks.

  1. the seed is determined by what ranking you had when the draw was made.  for example, ivanovic is #1 seed, when the draw was made, she was the #1 rank.

if a player (say sharapova) isnt in the tournament and she is ranked 6, everyone under her will move up one seed.  so, the number 7 ranked player will get the 6th seed

  2. The seed is what the player is ranked in the tournament (up to the number 32 in slams such as the US Open). Seeding is important, because it determines where a player is placed in the draw. For example, the #1 seed is plced in one half of the draw, and the #2 seed is placed in the opposite half of the draw, so the only time the #1 and #2 can play each other is in the finals. The others are correct about how someone can be ranked one thing, and be seeded something else. I'll add that the tournament can place a player where they'd like. For example- a few years ago, Andy Roddick was given the #2 seed in Wimbledon over Rafael Nadal, even though Roddick was ranked around 4th in the world or something like that while Nadal was ranked 2nd. Roddick was given the #2 seed because of his prior performances at Wimbledon- making it to the semis and the finals in the years prior to that. So prior performances in an event also play a actor in where a player is placed.

  3. seeding is how many points they have earned since they they started professionly, ranked is the points in the year.

  4. you're correct.-

seedings are stablished by rankings (the ranking at the moment they make the draws)

in big events the seedings usually are the same as the players ranking, but if one player doesn't play that tournament, the players that have lower rankings go up one spot in the seeds, i don't know if i'm clear.-

svetlana is # 3 cause last week (when the draw was made) she was 3 in the wta ranking.-

  5. Yes, it has to do with who is playing at that particular  tournament. If  the ranked # 1 decided not to play, then # 2 is seeded as # 1 and so forth.
