I'm playing Varsity Tennis at my high school this year. We start August 11th, but I need to start getting ready and conditioning myself. I need real tips and suggestions, hopefully from someone who's been in my situation. Please and thanks

  1. I'm a sophomore trying to make varsity too. What my coach and pros' are always telling me that matches are the key. Call some guys down and play matches. Matches help you to find others strength and weaknesses and helps you to find their style of play like if they run around a backhand because the don't have a strong one. Stuff like that helps tremendously. I also run a lot to get my legs strengthened for long matches.

Little things like that are really helpful

    Good Luck!!!

  2. Well I dont know much but I do know that you should play soccer its helps with footwork and you can try some swimming to build stamina. Thats all I know.

  3. You will be fine dont worry.  Try out my site to get some great tips.  Basically it offers tennis lessons from local and world famous pros.

If you are serious about improving, you should start by taking one article or video from my site per day, working on it and seeing how far it takes your game.

Dont just look at everything at once, dedicate some time to improving things based on each lesson you take on my site.

If you dont see improvements I would suggest taking some private lessons from a local pro, this will but you in great shape.

  4. Firstly, get on court with as many tennis balls as you can and practice getting your first serve in till it hurts. Eyes on the square and focus, focus, focus. Secondly serve as many second serves as you can, pretend your in a real game and must relax and concentrate on getting it in. Thirdly with a practice partner or ball machine, Come to the net and hit through the ball, slightly tilt open racquet face and do twenty forehand volleys, then twenty backhand volleys, remember, relax, eyes on the ball, tilt hips according to the side that the ball coming to you and hit through the ball. Don,t slap or punch, easy timing with good knees slightly bent in the ready position. Do this for fifteen minutes then practice hitting through the ball, head down, torso turned and backhand through the ball twenty times then swap to forehand, get in the ready position, eyes on the ball, head down, turn, keep your shoulders paralel and hit through the ball, don,t jerk up from the elbow, smooth full swing hit through the ball. You should keep saying this to yourself at all times, "Hit through the ball" with all serves, volleys. returns and smashes. Remember, stay on your toes and side to side fluid movement, head tucked in, pivoting arms and hips and hit through the ball.

  5. I'm in your same situation, only we start a day later.  I go running/jogging every day or every other day for about 30-40 minutes (definately helps with those long matches!).  Lifting weights is also very helpful.  The most important thing though is to go out and hit around.  Try and find different hitting partners, play doubles and singles to practice being up at the net and hitting groundstrokes, practice serving and practice lob recovery.  As long as you do some sort of physical activity everyday you should be ready for your tennis season.  Good Luck!
