Tennis roundup - Bryan brothers bag the Cincinnati Masters doubles title of the year
The current ATP World Tour Doubles winners Bob as well as Mike Bryan continued their winning momentum and captured their eighth tour level trophy of the year with a victory against Max Mirnyi and Mahesh Bhupathi in the final of the Western and Southern Financial Group Masters in a total of two sets on Sunday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
The American pair is currently ranked number two in this year’s ATP Doubles Rankings, with the top eight pairs towards the end of the year to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals competition in London.
Heading into the final Grand Slam, the United States Open tournament, which will start from Monday, the Bryan brothers, enjoys a winning streak of eight matches, having also captured the ATP World Tour Masters thousand trophies in Toronto a few days ago. Just a couple of weeks ago in Loss Angeles, the pair set the Open Era record for the most doubles trophies with a total of sixty two, surpassing the previous record of sixty one by Todd Woodbridge as well as Mark Woodforde.
They opened their trophy haul this year at the hard court Grand Slam Australian Open tournament and have also been successful in Rome, Delray Beach, Madrid as well as Houston.
“You never want to stop your struggle and hard work as the urge of getting better and better never ends. It never leaves you satisfied at any stage of your life which is good in a way as it keeps you improving further and aiming higher and higher. It keeps you focused towards your target,” said Bob after capturing the 2010 ATP Cincinnati Masters doubles title on Sunday. “At the moment, our entire focus and attention is on the big the winner and it felt absolutely amazing after breaking the record few weeks ago in Loss Angeles. People have been gossiping about it for a couple of years and I am glad that we successfully met the expectations of our fans who love us the most and have always supported us in all our matches all around the world,” he added.
Mike on the other hand commented, “I think a huge weight has been lifted since we broke the titles record in Loss Angeles and we are feeling much more relieved now. It was on our minds for quite a period of time and we actually wanted to do it at the grass court Grand Slam tournament anyhow we are glad and it will definitely further improve our game in the future as we will play much more confidently without any measure of pressure at all. To be a part of tennis history is itself an achievement.”
The second seeded pair was down with 0-2 during the first set of the final match on Sunday against the fourth seeded Indian pair Mirnyi as well as Bhupathi. However the Americans battled back strongly to grab the next five games prior securing a lead of one set. After that, the Bryan brothers never looked back and went on to win the title within a period of one hour at Cincinnati.
It was the fifth season in a row that the 32-year-old Bryan brothers were participating in the final of the ATP Cincinnati Masters Men’s tournament and the third time they have captured the title, having also succeeded back in 2003 as well as in 2008.  They also ended as runners up back in 2006, 2007 as well as in 2009.
Indian doubles team Bhupathi as well as Belarusian Mirnyi on the other hand, met their third loss in an ATP World Tour Masters thousand final this year, having also kicked out in Miami as well as in Monte-Carlo earlier this season.
