Tennis update, Roger Federer regains number two spot
The Swiss tennis maestro, Roger Federer jumped back into the number two position in the ATP World rankings released on Monday.
His improvement in ranking came after ending as runner up in the 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters Men’s Singles Competition, at the hands of top ranked Brit, Andy Murray in straight sets last night in China. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2.
The Scotsman captured his second title of the season, having won the Rogers Cup back in August this season.
In spite of the fact that the twenty-nine year old Swiss was defeated in the title battle by Murray, who remains at the fourth spot in the 2010 ATP rankings list, the right hander Roger did enough to overtake his Serbian fellow, Novak Djokovic,
whom he bundled out of the tournament in Shanghai.
Federer, who turned professional back in 1998, has so far won a total of sixteen Grand Slam trophies in his career. He also remained at the number one position for a record two hundred and thirty-seven weeks.
The Basel born was also awarded as the Laureus World Sportsman of the Season on four occasions in a row from 2005 to 2008. Due to his mastery over the game of tennis, the Swiss is widely known as the Federer Express, Tennis Maestro or simply
Maestro.
Roger, who has so far triumphed in the season ending, Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London on four occasions, was playing in Shanghai for the first time since his semi final exit at the year’s final major, the United States Open in
New York.
He made his way into the semi final after getting the better of World number five Robin Soderling in the final eight. By advancing into the semis in New York, the Fed Express posted his 20th clash victory in a major event this
season. In the semi final, the Swiss however was sent packing by the ultimate runner up, Novak Djokovic in a five setter epic. The final match score was 7–5, 1–6, 7–5, 2–6, 5–7.
At the top of the ATP rankings list, Rafael Nadal of Spain, who was defeated by, Jurgen Melzer, of Austria in the third round in China, continues to lead by more than four thousand points.
