Why does the racquet sports like badminton and squash not that lucrative as tennis. In term of prize money, a champion at tennis tournament e.g. Wimbledon get more than a million dollar while in badminton, e.g. All England the champion get as much as USD 16K and in squash tournament the winner just get around USD 10K. Why is it so much different? Is it because those sports does not as popular as tennis or just because it being dominated by Asian players?

  1. When it come to sports, I mean any sports, sponsorship is vital. The more popular the sports to the world, more money will be injected to them. We can see a very massive different between prize money in tennis with badminton and squash. A company most likely to give their money so that they can advertise their name and make everyone in the world see it. With tennis being aired from US to Brazil, Europe to Africa, Russia to Asia and Australia, big company or corporations are  willing to spend big to advertise the name. In fact, we can see tennis players came from all around the world while in badminton and squash, most of them came from Asia, UK and Australia only.

    Popular mean more money...

  2. Sponsorship is the end result but the lack of sponsorship comes because squash and badminton are not as appealing spectator sports. Tennis is simply easier to watch than badminton and squash so it gets better numbers, both live and on television and thus the sponsorship money is more abundant.

  3. It would probably be like you said, a little bit to do with the popularity of the sport.

It's also probably because of the amount of sponsors, like a championship like Wimbledon almost everyone would have heard of it, and with tennis being more popular than badminton and squash it attracts more sponsors adding to the prize money!

    Hope that helps :)
