  1. Unless she was fired for breaking the law, how would that end up on a background check?

  2. I must respectfully disagree with the other answer.  Background checks can include:

    Employment history

    Criminal Records

    Credit Reports

    Driving History

    Workers Compensation Claims

    Education Verification

    Reference Checking

She can indicate that she does not want the former employer contacted, which is her right to do so and she can ask to provide her w-2's or pay stubs to verify employment.

That being said, if she allows them to contact her former employer, most will only discuss dates and position and possibly eligibility for rehire.  Very few employers will say more than that for fear of legal action.  There's a fine line between slander and opinion.

She could always have you or someone else she knows call the former employer under the guise of verifying employment and see what they say.  There's no harm in that and she'll know what will happen.

  3. She would have to list them as a previous employer on a resume if she wanted to use that experience. The hiring person at the next job can call to verify previous employment but it is illegal for the previous employer to tell them why she was  terminated. They can just inform the new employer she was fired. Tell her it would be best for her to prepare a really great list of references to supply them with to counteract the negative and to be honest with the person conducting the interview and explain she was released.

As far as background checks go those only pull up criminal records. you don't have a permanent record like school that follows you.

** background checks may pull up employment history but it does not list a reason for termination**

  4. I agree with Jen and let's include a few more items that can be checked.

    Anti-Terrorist Check

    Worker's Compensation

    Driver's Bureau

(I had 2 driving offenses dating back 7 years on my record...what a surprise)

    Federal Civil History

along with Employement and Degree verification.

    Here's a suggestion.

Just like they suggest you check your credit score (oh, they can check that also), you should also check YOUR OWN background check history.

Go to http://www.pre-employment.com/summary_se... and check out a description of each and order your own just for your comfort level.
