Question:

Terms for discussing boardgames?

If I put forth 'field,' 'token,' and 'rule,' what meanings and understandings do you attach to those terms?

I'm aiming at discovering (or, if needs be, inventing) a common vocabulary that would allow comparative analyses of games as diverse as chess and Acquire, or go and Sorry! To that end, I seek the pre-existing understandings of those terms.

Note: I am NOT interested in mathematical 'game theory.' That discipline, while it holds some interest for me, is WAY out of touch with games as I understand them. Minimaxes, Playfair squares, the 'group theory' gimmickry lately attached, etc. are all well and good--but they don't explain 'playful' worth a d**n.

  1. As far as I know, there is no universally defined lexicon, although lots of books come up with their own set of words.

  2. To me "field" could mean area of play, or it could mean the players who are available to play.

"Token" could be a game piece or marker.

"Rule" would be a universally accepted guideline for play.
