  1. depending on how it was set up, what I am getting though is they split up the teams by handicap and so 1st flight or division is the really good players 2nd is still good players but not the caliber of 1st flight and so on and so forth until the teams are split into their respected groups.  if that makes any sense.  It doesn't mean you won the whole tournament but you might as well have being 1st flight, but one of the other teams in a different flight may have shot better with handicap in place, but I doubt it

  2. 1st place 1st flight means

    you won 1st place

    without your handicapp

  3. In club tournaments with a great number of contestants the field may be broken into flights which are usually based on  similar team handicaps. The teams play a round - robin with each team in the flight playing one another. The flight winners then play an additional set number of holes with the lowest score being declared the overall winner of the tournament. If he tournament runs 3 days the flights usually consist of 8 teams with 3 nine hole matches he first day, 2 the 2nd and 3rd days with the flight winners playing an extra nine to determine the overall winner.

  4. I don't know what that means, but I'll take the ten points if nobody else answers.

  5. Clubs will usually have a Championship flight and up to 3 additional flights depending on the number of participants.  In some cases Flighting takes place after the front nine.  No  what you won was prize money for the first flight.  The Overall winner would be the group that won the Championship flight.  (Lowest score still wins)

  6. Just think of 'flight' as 'class' or 'division' in other sports.  Usually golf tournaments have players divided in to 2 or more flights based on either handicap index, age (junior, regular, senior...etc),

And No, it does not mean you won the entire tournament.  There are other winners that came first in their flight.   Your team came in first in your flight.

  7. the only first flight i have ever heard of in golf is a set of golf clubs made for ladies called FIRST FLIGHT.

  8. the wild thing

When they talk about flights, this is how they seperate all the different golfers in a tournament.  For example:

Say you had a tournament and all the golfers were say "scratch" golfers.  Meaning they had a zero handicap.  There would be no need for flights.  All of those golfers are the same and they all play against each other.  Same thing if all these golfers played in a 4 man scramble (this is where everyone tee's off, you then pick the best shot, they everyone drops their balls at the best shot, everyone hits again, and so on until the ball is holed) which is what I think you are talking about, there would be no need for flights again since all the golfer are of the same caliber.

Now here is where flights come in.  Say you are playing in this 4 man scramble (best ball it is called sometimes) and the players are all different handicaps.  Some are scratch, some have 10 handicaps, 15, 30 and so on.  Sometimes they will even classify these players as "A", "B", C, D.  This way all of the say zero to 10 handicaps are A, 11 to 20 are B and so on.  They can then make teams up.

But you picked your own team and by adding up all of the players in your group they determined that you were not in the "Scratch" "championship" flights, but 1st flight.  This way you were competing against people that you "Could" compete against.  You would not want to go against the "championship" flight, because you would probably not have a chance against them.  So, the committee made different flights so that all the people of equal ability could compete fairly against each other.

So what you have done is great.  You won the 1st flight, which is great.  You and your foursome probably did not win the whole tournament, but you did beat up the people in your flight.

    GREAT JOB!
