During period of good behavior.  While life is the norm, until retirement or death, impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanors pursuant to the Constitution cuts short an otherwise lifetime tenor.  While rare, a handful of federal judges accused or convicted of breaking the law have been successfully impeached by the House AND removed by the Senate.

  3. Federal judges, including those on the Supreme Court, are appointed for life, specifically so that they will be independent of political pressure. It's in the Constitution.
