Terrell Owens takes shots at Donovan McNabb
After Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb was benched by head coach Mike Shanahan - who gave the responsibility of running the team's two-minute offence to Rex Grossman - one of McNabb's former team-mates didn't pull any punches when he stated
that he understood why the Redskins pulled him.
Bengals wide receiver Terrell Owens, who had been McNabb's team-mate when both were with the Philadelphia Eagles back during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, made several tongue-in-cheek comments about the situation in Washington on the reality television show
he hosts with team-mate Chad Ochocinco, "The T.Ocho Show".
"Well, I don't really want to start anything, but I did play in the Super Bowl, and there were rumours where he couldn't get our two-minute offence going at the end of the game," Owens said alluding to the Eagles 24-21 Super Bowl defeat at the hands of the
New England Patriots. "I'm just saying."
After being pressed to elaborate on the comment, Owens only responded with, "I'm just saying."
Owens, who frequently complains that his own suggestions on how to run the Bengals offence often get overlooked, also said in defence of Shanahan's decision, "He's the head coach, so it has to make sense. Well, this is a situation where Mike Shanahan, he
sees these two quarterbacks on an everyday basis. So he's had a chance to observe."
Rumours have circulated that McNabb does not have the physical or mental toughness to run the Redskins' two-minute drill. It was also suggested that Rex Grossman had a better understanding of the team's two-minute offence than McNabb did. Whatever the case
may be, the Redskins have begun working out other quarterbacks as they search for other options. McNabb's true status with the team remains unclear.
Owens and McNabb's tenuous relationship was well documented while they were team-mates in Philadelphia. Five years later, and a full conference removed, and it appears they're still not getting along.
