Terrell Owens wants to return to the National Football League – NFL News Update
Terrell Owens had a tough 2011 season, which could also be taken as a sign that his professional career is over. However, the player thinks otherwise and believes that he will return to the National Football League (NFL).
Owens, who failed to attract attention of any franchise of the league last year, has joined the Indoor Football League after signing a deal with Allen Wranglers.
On Wednesday February 8, 2012, when he was officially introduced to the fans of his new club, he shared emotional sentiments coupled with his determination of returning to the league again.
“I haven't retired from the NFL. I want to play a couple more years. This right here will allow me to do that and assess where I am. I know I'm physically fit to play the game still."
The 38-year-old Owen started his professional NFL career with San Francisco 49ers in 1996. In 2004, he joined Philadelphia Eagles and later joined hands with Dallas Cowboys in 2006.
In 2009, much to Owens’ surprise, Cowboys released him. A few months before the release, Owens had signed a $34 million contract extension with the franchise.
He also alleged later that he was kept in dark about the decision and mentioned that Cowboys’ owner/general manger, Jerry Jones, had assured him of staying with the franchise.
Owens is still trying to solve the riddle as to why he was released by the Cowboys.
“It was very disappointing," Owens said of the Cowboys’ decision.
He added that:
“It was one of those things where again it's a lot of lip service -- people saying they're going to do one thing and do another.”
Owens is disappointed, but not angry.
He said of the conversation with Jerry Jones that:
"He [Jones] had told me I was going to be a big part of that process and then it's like having the wind knocked out of you. Life goes on...I'm not bitter about it."
After being released by Cowboys, Owens joined Buffalo Bills where he spent around a year before moving to Cincinnati Bengals in 2010. He had signed a one-year deal with Bengals.
Owens suffered a torn ACL during the next offseason and underwent a surgery after which he was cleared to play. However, no team was interested in signing him to its roster.
The dejected player eventually ended up joining hands with Allen Wranglers.
Considering his age, it is not likely for Owen to make a comeback in the NFL. It is in his best interest to stay with Wranglers as long as he can and secure the monetary benefits.
