Terrible fear of storms.

I have a terrible fear of storms, and I live in the midwest. It is not the sound, but the fact that they might be severe. I really need help, but everything I have tried has not worked. I cannot expose my self to it. It is such a bad phobia. What can I do? And if you want to say something rude, do not comment.

  1. Well, if it is such a severe phobia, then I don't think any of my non-professional advice would help.  You really need to find professional help.  Do not be ashamed to do so.  Get the help you need so you can lead a productive happy life.  My best wishes to you.

  2. You can try a method called graduated exposure therapy.  Basically, you gradually expose yourself to things that make you uncomfortable.  Start reading a book about storms.  Maybe try and look at some pictures of nasty storms, listen to storm recordings.  Next time there's a storm coming, just sit and listen to it.  Then maybe the next time, try and watch out the window even.  The idea is to gradually desensitize yourself to where they aren't as big a deal for you.

If it's really a problem, you can go see a behavioral psychologist who will help you through it.

  3. sorry to say but there really is not anything you can do to prevent the storm or the severity --- you can prepare yourself and your family, have things ready, if you have a place to go (like a basement) make it comfortable and surround yourself with happy things

storms are scary, living in Hawaii I am so scared of tidal waves, tsumnami, having my house and the whole island become part of the ocean, it's bad enough there are signs that say "tidal wave safe zones," like if I would stand there I am guartneed to survive, no - scary!

  4. Living in the Midwest I also am afraid of severe storms. I guess the big fear is Tornadoes . One of the things you can do for yourself is to have a plan of where.your going to go in the event of a storm. Have emergency supplies ready, flashlight , bottled water etc.Have a practice run. Preparing so that in the event of bad weather you know what to do. A therapist can help you find out why the fear is so bad and if it truly is a Phobia
