Terriers close season with 3-1 win over Wildcats – Volleyball News
The women’s volleyball team from Davidson College (Wildcats), crossed paths with archrival, Wofford College, on Sunday, November 13, at Benjamin Johnson Arena in a Southern Conference match. Terriers earned the win by sending 25-22, 25-23, 14-25, and 25-22
on board. ‘Cats could only claim one set in the match, while Terriers pulled off success by winning the remaining three sets. Wofford finished off the season with 14-19 record, whereas Davidson ended up with 15-14 for the season.
Wofford’s outside hitter, Amanda Liguori, contributed 20 points via her career-high 18 and two solo blocks. She recorded .304 hitting percentage and committed only four errors in the match. The equally talented Rachel Woodlee registered 16 kills on 42 attempts
with five errors for .262 hitting percentage. Another dynamic duo of Arden Anderson and Wendy Burnett tallied nine kills apiece, while Bekah Dorsey contributed 48 assists. Reagan Styles was active on the receiving end and finished with 21 digs. On the whole, Styles
completed the season with 1,178 career digs and was just six digs shy of fifth place in program history.
First set
The start of the match was full of eye-catching action from the both sides. Terriers came out swinging and worked out nice shots. Likewise, the Wildcats were ready to take the challenge. They returned many of the difficult shots and did not let the Terriers
go far with the lead. Score inched up slowly and eventually tied at 15-all. After the second technical timeout, Terriers rallied 5-0 run and further took the score to 20-15. ‘Cats struggled to chase and shortened the difference of points to two at 24-22 but
Terriers sealed first-set with 25-22.
Second set
Next set was sort of image of previous set as Wofford made a good start and grabbed lead of 11-7, while Davidson squad came from behind to tie the score at 18-18. Terriers had good grip on the ball but ‘Cats showed great temperament to catch up with the
opponent. During the next couple of points, the Wildcats took the lead twice and seemed quite confident about their performance. Nonetheless, Terriers knotted things up near the end point (23-all). Woodlee and Liguori hit mighty shots to break the tie at 23
and gave Wofford the 25-23 win.
Third set
After winning two sets in row, Terriers enjoyed the top form. They started the third set in their usual style and incorporated a flurry of attack shots. Wildcats were under lot of stress after losing two sets but they did not lose heart and continued with
their effort. They picked up the lead at 10-9 and stretched the points with more convincing shots as the Wildcats rallied past to 13-10. They controlled the action on centre court and avoided any unnecessary mistakes. Tindall Sewell and Taylor Pisel developed
good chemistry between them and kept the Wildcats ahead of Terriers. The hard work paid off and finally Davidson captured third set of the match, 25-14.
Fourth set
Davidson took an early 6-1 lead in the fourth set, but failed to keep the momentum going. Meanwhile, the Terriers rallied back for a tie at nine. 'Cats broke the tie and converted the score to 13-11, before Wofford went on a 3-1 run to tie the set at 14.
Terriers grabbed the lead at 17-15 and kept going to 23-19. They finally nailed the win by 25-22.
