I have a fear of flying, but I find that I can stay calm during the flight except during take off and extreme turbulence..however, take off is worst...I actually hyper ventilate and cry because I am terrified until the plane levels out and you hear the ding...is there anyway to make myself calm during take off until the ding?

  1. ask your doctor fir soome immendiate sleeping pills, and eat or drink them once u get on the plane...or if u really want to get over the fear, then why dont u talk to some people on plane and maybe ask the flight attendants to help you through it..

  2. I know your pain. I am the same way. Although even after the plane levels out...I still sometimes find myself gripping onto my seat it the plane moves in the slightest. The best thing you can do is just relax. Easier said then done i know! But just take a few deep breaths, close your eyes and relax. Chew some gum to help your ears. Distract yourself any way possible. Talk to someone next to you and it will be over before you know it. It only takes a few min.

    Good luck! :)

I really hope you have a safe trip and get over your fear!

We are in the same boat!

  3. what? that is the best part the take off. I love to look out the window and watch the cars and people shrink and get smaller and the you go into the clouds.

  4. I usually just cover my ears and close my eyes.

  5. i am only 15 and i have fear of flying too. i'm taking a 6hours flight tomorrow so I am going to take some Alprazolam to calm me down

  6. My mother-in-law taught me this little trick. Wiggle your toes. It give you something to think about other then the take off. And no one can see you doing it. It worked for me not everyone needs booze or drugs to get through tough times. Good luck.

  7. I have the same problem. One thing I do is remind myself of this fact: that even though it seems scary, rationally speaking. the risk of death is GREATER each time we get into a car.

During takeoff and landing, I pray, commit myself to God, and remind myself that no matter what happens, I want to be fully aware, and able to act responsibly toward myself and other passengers.

The fear of flying is not rational, but I hope this helps.

  8. Listen to your Ipod, turn up the music very loud.  Also, have a few drinks before, or take a valium or dramamine so you can go right to sleep.

  9. Try thinking you're somewhere else maybe. Try earplugs, that might help too.

  10. square breathing really try it!

    How to SQUARE BREATHE

Inhale to the count of four, hold to the count of four, exhale to the count of four and hold again to the count of four.

  11. Have some stiff drinks in an airport bar before you board.  Works for me.

  12. I've never really had the fear of flying, but I've had to mentor people I fly with through their fears. I recommend chewing gum to help with your ears. It also focuses you on something else other than the plane. Deep breathing also is helpful, because the deeper you breath the more centured you are. Short breathing makes you flighty and more prone towards panic.

What also helps is distracting yourself. Wiggle your toes, like someone above me said, is good. Or, lift up your feet, put them back down on the ground, and then lift them again helps. Repeat that, and try to do it as slowly as possible. Don't do it fast, that can panic your body more. Closing your eyes, plugging your ears, also helps.

Don't look at news papers, or pictures, that doesn't help. It will just give you a headache and makes you plane-sick. Same thing with music. Music does help some people, but it just gives other stomach sickness.

Also, if you know or seem comfortable with the person next to you, you can talk to them.

Mainly, focus on something other than the plane and breathe deeply. I wish you the best of flights!!

  13. I wish I could help, I luckily don't have that problem. Perhaps some distractions would help such as newspapers, talking to your seatmate, or falling asleep quickly before takeoff lol good luck!!

  14. dont worry i went through this too just think about something nice.. or the destination that you are about to go too just dont even think about the take of . for me the first time i went on an airplane i chewed alotttttt of gum ! lol

    good luck
