Question:

Terrified of driving?

I'm 19 and I have never drove a car in my life. (I know that I'm lame.) I have my permit, but whenever I get behind the wheel, I get extremely nervous. I keep picturing myself getting into an accident or not doing something right. I try hard not to think it, but I can't help myself. Everytime someone tries to get me to drive, I always make up excuses. I want to get my license soon, but I can't shake my fear. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

  1. The only way you can overcome your fear is to become familiar with your vehicle...How well does it perform (acceleration, stopping, turning)?..How well can I keep it in a lane on the road or in a parking lot?..Remember that the vehicle is not going to do anything that you don't tell it to do - most of the time...You see very clearly that there is no room for anything that will affect your ability to drive - like alcohol, drugs, using a cell phone, even lack of sleep among other things...Practice - on residential streets, in empty parking lots...The more you practice, the more confident you'll feel behind the wheel...Keep your caution about being behind the wheel, it will help to keep you out trouble...You can do it.

    All the best.

  2. Start off small. Drive around a bit in a parking lot, getting used to braking and acceleration. Then, go on small jaunts to a neighborhood store, post office, etc. Something that keeps you off of the highway.

Then, on a Sunday morning at about 6AM (no traffic, unless you live in LA or NYC), take a spin on more challenging roads. Get used to the basics, then have someone go with you the first time you feel ready to wonder out into real-time traffic. You can always back out (nobody will call you "chicken") and let them drive if you're uncomfy.

In a nutshell: "work your way up".

    Good luck.

  3. then do us all a favor and stay off the road u will probably be saving somebodies family alot of heartache

  4. Take lessons from a qualified instructor and try to relax. You have just as much right to use the roads when you're learning as anybody else. And if anyone starts to pressure you, ignore them they'll just have to be patient. Remember that everyone you see behind the wheel of a car had to learn at some point. And we were all nervous (if we're honest) at first. And some of us don't mind waiting for learners cos we're just nice people. And i wish you lots of luck and happy motoring.

  5. Just take a deep breath, relax, and remember what you have been taught, and you'll do fine!
