Terry Francona backs off from Chicago Cubs consideration
One of the strangest moves in baseball has happened since the Boston Red Sox club started looking for a candidate to replace Terry Francona, who left the club after a poor showing at the end of the last regular season to join the Chicago Cubs as a manager.
Francona has changed his stance even less than a month and gave a hint that he might pull him out from the Cubs’ position.
It does not mean he will take back the Red Sox position as it has not been seen in any of his statements.
"I don't know that I can confirm that (report that he won't manage in 2012)," Francona said Wednesday on ‘The Waddle & Silvy Show’ on ESPN 1000.
Francona seemed to step back to get some more time for him to think about the situation. He believes that there is a time and chance available and will also be there, so time should be taken to think carefully of any decision made. Francona stated that managing
is not an easy thing to do and it gave you many bruises at the end of every year.
Terry was manager for the Boston Red Sox under the leadership of Theo Epstein, who was the general manager of the Red Sox this past season. Francona was also thinking to join the World Series winner St. Louis Cardinals, but the club has chosen Mike Matheny
for the position. Francona had a meeting with Theo, who is now president of baseball operations for the Cubs and decided that it will not be a good option for him to join the team.
"Me and Theo have talked so much the past month," Francona said. "I think he knows how I feel, and I know how he feels. Sometimes I just think as close as we are, and we'll always be close, I'm not sure I was the right person for that job right now.”
Francona commented that ESPN and MLB networks have contacted him for broadcasting and he is thinking seriously to accept these opportunities. Cubs are now looking to make follow-up moves on DeMarlo, Mike Maddux, Sandy Alomar Jr. and Pete Mackanin.
