Terry Francona expresses disappointment and shock on Buck Showalter’s comments – MLB Update
Things got a bit complicated for Buck Showalter who issued a few disturbing comments about Derek Jeter and Theo Epstein. The Baltimore Orioles manager had an interview with a popular magazine, as the comments he made on the two personalities were supposed
to be depicted in the April issue of the magazine but many ball stars got their hands on the cover early. Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona was one of the people to read the script and he was immensely disappointed.
The comments that were targeted on Red Sox general manager Epstein greatly aggravated Francona. The Orioles took on the Red Sox in Sarasota, Florida, in a recent Grapefruit League fixture. Showalter made the first call on his error by making a comment on
contacting Francona before the game. He wanted to clear the water between the two and he wanted to express his liking for him.
The Orioles won the game on the field, 4-3, but Francona had been upset over the way things had come about. He talked in annoyance about the situation and said, "[I] just thought that was a little bit out of line - I don't think he'd be appreciating if I
said something about Andy [MacPhail, Orioles president of baseball operations], which I wouldn't," Francona added. "None of my business. And for the record, I think Andy's really good."
The Red Sox skipper was not upset by the reports at first but when he got the chance to read the article himself, he was greatly disappointed by the situation that had pulled his boss on to the fire.
"I don't think that's anybody's place," Francona said. "That's my boss. I was actually kind of aggravated a little bit. It's not the end of the world, but I thought he shouldn't have done it."
Though Showalter has admitted to being a bit jealous over the luck the Red Sox have enjoyed over the past seasons, his comments still seem to be considered rash by many critics in the baseball world. Many do believe nothing is new here. Relations are not
dampened in any way. Both skippers respect each other.
