Terry Price wins his maiden European Seniors Tour title at the Pon Senior Open
Australia’s Terry Price scored the biggest win of his professional career with a six-stroke victory at the Pon Senior Open in Germany on Sunday.
It was also the biggest victory on the European Seniors Tour in 2012, as the previous best was recorded by Tim Thelen, when he defeated Peter Fowler, Barry Lane and Mark Mouland with a three-stroke margin.
The 51-year-old held his nerves in the final round and recorded a five-under par 67 for a 16-under par tournament score, at the Winston Open course.
It was the first ever European Seniors Tour victory of his career, earning him the winner’s cheque of €60,000.
Earlier in the round, Barry Lane of England started off his round with a bang and birdied five of his first seven holes. In the meantime, Price responded it by birdying two of the first three holes.
He then stormed way ahead of his opponents, after making a run of four consecutive birdies, starting from the ninth hole. He then conceded the only bogey of the day on the 13th hole followed by five par putts, to end the tournament.
“It feels great to win,” Price said. “The week couldn’t really have gone any better – it was very smooth. I only made two bogeys all week and it was tough at points out there so it was by no means easy and that makes it all the more satisfying”.
“Because I had a good lead overnight, I actually thought that the best way to approach today was to set myself a target,” he added. “I was trying to get to 17 under for the week and I failed by one but I suppose when you win by six shots you can’t have too
many complaints!”
Lane, in the meantime, settled for a six-under par 66 and shared the second spot with Marc Farry at a 10-under par tournament score.
Bill Longmuir took the sole fourth position with a nine-under par score. Gary Wolstenholme, Andrew Sherborne and Glenn Ralph settled further a stroke back for a shared fifth place on the leaderboard.
