Terry Russ named Volunteer of the Year
The PGA Tour has named Terry Russ Volunteer of the Year. This award was given to Russ in recognition of his services at the Shell Houston Open.
Russ was not just a follower of golf, in fact he had been very active in promoting the sport in and around Houston.
Terry had given 46 years of his life to Houston Golf Association and he had been a regular volunteer at the Shell Houston Open since the beginning of his career in Houston Golf Association.
Russ passed away earlier this year in August and it is extremely sad that Houston lost one of the biggest followers of the sport.
“If Terry were here today to accept this award, he would be so humbled,” said Steve Timms, President and CEO of the Houston Golf Association.
Terry joined the Huston Golf Association in mid-1960s and his initial role was to pick up trash and help people in the parking lot.
Although these tasks are very nominal, he took them as if they would contribute in the tournaments success or failure. He was a very hardworking and a dedicated person throughout his life.
Russ was a civil engineer by profession and his skill helped HGA in numerous projects saving the Associations money and time.
“In fact, he would count off a list of others he would say deserved it before him. That is just the kind of person he was. But, what he contributed to further the mission of the HGA is unparalleled. No one deserves this award more than Terry”.
Russ had a very close affection with the tournament. For over 25 years, he served on the first or tenth hole during the tournament. Not only that but he also spent some time as a Marshall, as an attendant in the parking lot and garbage cleaner.
Probably the most proud moment of his life came in 1981 when he was elected by fellow volunteers to lead them as a General Chairman in the tournament.
Houston Golf Association rewarded Terry Russ with an Honorary Director’s post in the Association. Only three persons including Terry have ever held that appointment.
