Terry Stotts emerges as a probable candidate for Portland Trail Blazers head coach job – NBA News
Terry Stotts has emerged as a probable candidate for the head coaching stint at the Portland Trail Blazers. Stotts is believed to have been interviewed by the Trail Blazers new General Manager Neil Olshey, and is likely to be given
a second interview.
Terry is currently the offensive coordinator of the Mavericks, and is one of several coaches in the list of probables for Portland. The list includes Michael Malone of the Golden State Warriors, Adrian Griffin of the Chicago Bulls,
Elston Turner of the Phoenix Suns, Lester Connor of the Atlanta Hawks and Brian Shaw of the Indiana Pacers, among others.
Stotts has experience of coaching an NBA franchise in a head coach capacity. He has been at the helm of affairs for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Atlanta Hawks. He has a 114-168 record as a head coach and his best season came with
the Bucks in the 2005-06 NBA season, where he led them to 40-42 record and a playoff spot. The Bucks however lost in the first round of the playoffs.
“Of all the coaches presently in play, Terry is by far the best available. He's a professional and understands the process of NBA coaching and how to communicate and teach young players,” said Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle
recently while talking to the Oregonian.
Stotts was hired shortly after Carlisle joined the Mavericks as the head coach in 2008, and was part of the coaching staff when they won the NBA Championship in the 2010-2011 season. If he manages to land the job at Portland, Stotts
will be the 2nd assistant coach from the Mavericks 2011 title winning team that has gone on to land head coaching assignments. Dwane Casey was the Mavericks top defensive assistant in 2011, and was later signed by the Toronto Raptors in the summer
of 2011.
“I had two other jobs prior to going to Dallas. There are a lot of inexperienced coaches who might lose four or five early games and get paralyzed. Terry wouldn't blink. It pains me to say this, but I think he's 100 percent the
right coach for Portland,” added Carlisle.
The final decision is now in the hands of the Neil Olshey and the Portland Trail Blazers.
