Test Cricket needs innovations to maintain popularity amidst Twenty20s, believes http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Michael-Brearley-c68348 – Cricket News Update
Mike Brearley, the former English skipper, fears that the future of the Test cricket is at stake as the innovative Twenty20 format is rapidly prevailing over the game. He argues that we must do our best to preserve the Test cricket by introducing certain
innovations in it.
Brearley expressed these thoughts in his interview with Daily News and Analysis (DNA), a news website.
He is of the view that limited-over cricket has changed everything and the longer format also needs to be updated in order to maintain its importance.
The former captain suggested that the International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) should start day-night Tests and Test championships, which he thinks, will help improving the standard and viewership of the game.
The Twenty20 format, since its inception, has been at the top of International cricket. Based on limited overs and power-hitting, this format contains more thrill and interest. Moreover, it consumes less time as compared to ODIs and Tests, making it easy
to follow.
The first ICC T20 World Cup was played in 2007. Since then, there has been abundance of T20 leagues and tournaments around the globe and round the clock. Almost all ace cricketing nations have established leagues like Big Bash of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, Friends Life
of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.
These leagues sign players from different countries and regions of the world as they have lucrative offers.
On the top of all, there is the Indian Premier League, which has proved to be a blockbuster commercial success. Started in 2008, the showpiece domestic tournament of India has garnered a huge fan following.
Brearley has also lauded the success of the IPL but also showed his concerns about the league’s impact on Test cricket.
Having played his last International match in 1981, Brearley had 39 Tests and 25 ODIs to his name before he retired.
