Question:

Testing for your commercial drivers license?

How many times did you have to take the knowledge test? I have been studying my guide and attending my CDL training course but I keep failing the online pre-test for the permit. I have one more day left til I go take it, and my boss is going to be annoyed if I dont have the permit by Friday!

I find the technical terms and mechanical bits to be terribly confusing and hard to absorb.

Any tips or advice?

  1. i worked as a teck on 18 wheelers and all i had to do was go over the rules of the road if you cant get them to where you absolutely know them you may need to find a another career i have seen some bad thing by truck drivers no offense some drivers scare me i have seen trucks come in the shop when we had to unhook the trailer when the mans blood was all down the side of the truck and i have seen what these trucks can do to a regular car so take it serious and know everything and all ways be careful i also seen people bring in trucks that shouldn't be on the road

one time i had a old mac come in drive 500 miles with a cracked steering arm by luck of god it didn't brake till he drove it in the shop we had to steer it by a pry bar

  2. Tell your boss that if you haven't had any formal training, you probably won't pass the test.  Trucks and cars are similar... they both have engines, brakes and tires, but they do not operate the same way and if you haven't had someone who knows the difference between a truck and a car teach you too, you will fail.

There is too much to learn and put into practice to do by yourself.  You need someone to show you the difference between the items on Air Brakes compared to the items on Hydrolic brakes on a car.  Some of the things look the same, only bigger, but that is where the similarity ends.

Print this answer out and take it to your boss.  Explain to them that you need to get some formal training from someone who knows what they are talking about, or you will never pass the test.  It's like trying to become a brain surgeon by reading the book.  It just doesn't work.

Check out local truck driving schools.  You may not need to take the whole course, but it sounds like you need some instruction so that you have more confidence to pass the exams.  Getting your CDL isn't just getting behind the wheel and driving.  You have to have "working knowledge" of the truck as well.

    Good luck to you.
