Testy conditions at La Sauzaie keep surfers at bay during Round 4 of ASP 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro returned to its main site of La Sauzaie in Bretignolles-sur-Mer, France, on Friday afternoon, April 20, to get started with the fourth round (Round of 32).
The afternoon session featured a handful of impressive performances, a few of which led to the victory of France’s Vincent Duvignac, his compatriot Joan Duru, Portugal’s Justin Mujica and Basque Country’s Txaber Trojaola in their respective Round 4 heats
and thus confirmed their place in the Quarter-finals.
The big sets on offer at the primary event site continued to trouble the competition field comprising of both local and international surfers as they sought to keep themselves alive in the contention for the event title. With the heats pitted four surfers
against each other, it turned out to be a desperate battle to grab the scoring opportunities that appeared.
The opening heat of Round 4 saw Duvignac continued his excellent run of form to claim another victory after finishing with an unbeaten heat-total of 11.47 points. His compatriot William Aliotti finished in runner-up place after scoring a heat-total of 9.10
points.
Spain’s Vicente Romero and Reunion Island’s Medi Veminardi failed to make much of an impact during the course of the four-man battle after finishing with a heat-total of 7.30 and 4.77 points respectively.
The second heat turned out to be a low-scoring contest, with the eventual result coming out in Mujica’s favour as he finished with a heat-total of 9.77 points. He was accompanied into the Quarter-finals by Netherland’s Yannick De Jager, who managed to claim
runner-up place through a heat-total of 8.67 points.
France’s Tim Boal and Basque Country’s Borja Agote rounded out the bottom-two position with a heat-total of 7.70 and 7.67 points respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
Trojaola managed to claim top honours in the third heat of Round 4 after finishing with a heat-total of 9.23 points. Great Britain’s Jayce Robinson finished in runner-up place after grabbing second place with a two-wave total of 8.83 points.
France’s Pierre-Valentin Labor and Basque Country’s Eneko Acero rounded out the bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 8.70 and 5.60 points respectively.
Duru put on one of the most brilliant performances of the day, getting to a heat-total of 16.50 points to claim top honours in the fourth heat and confidently make his way into the Quarter-finals.
Basque Country’s Indar Unanue finished in second place to make the Quarter-final cut as well. Portugal’s Filipe Jervis and Great Britain’s Stuart Campbell got ejected from the contention for the event title after scoring a heat-total of 7.97 and 5.86 points
