Tetiana Luzhanska overcomes Zhao Yi-Jing in second round – WANLIMA Women’s Open 2011
Ukrainian tennis pro Tetiana Luzhanska defeated Zhao Yi-Jing of China in three tight sets 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 on Wednesday to book her place in the quarterfinal round of 2011 WANLIMA International Women’s Open here in Guangzhou, China.
Zhao made a very rusty start to the contest as she suffered a break of serve in the very first game of the opening set. Luzhanska displayed some great serving skills and she held on to the crucial service games to take control
of things. Using the hit and volley technique on the hard courts of Guangzhou extremely effectively, she bamboozled the challenger with her well executed drop shots.
Hitting a blazing serve ace at 4-3, she took a tricky 5-3 lead to serve out the set. World number 140 Luzhanska did well to hold on to her next service games. However, under pressure, she could not stop her rival from clinching
the set 6-4 and 1-0 set score lead.
Ranked 437 in the world, Zhao changed her gears in the following set and displayed her A-game to shift the balance of the match. Breaking the serve at regular intervals, she raced to an impassable 5-2 lead. Clinching three straight
points on her next service game, she set up three set points for herself and then converted the first one with a brilliant passing shot to level the score 1-1.
Some highly competitive tennis was witnessed in the third and final set as both women put in a lot of effort to get the upper hand. Trading serve breaks, the contestants showed remarkable determination and fighting spirit to stay
in the match. With her strong serves, Luzhanska managed to secure her sixth service game to earn a tricky 6-5 lead.
Breaking her opponent for the ninth time in the match, Luzhanska completed an emphatic victory in a match that lasted for nearly two hours. She will certainly take a lot of confidence from this win. However, to achieve similar
results in the final stages of the tournament, she must bring more consistency to her game play.
