Tetiana Luzhanska upsets Bojana Jovanovski to move into 2nd round – WANLIMA Women’s Open 2011
Ukrainian tennis pro Tetiana Luzhanska battled past number five seed Bojana Jovanovski 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4) on Tuesday to book her place in the second round of 2011 WANLIMA International Women’s Open here in Guangzhou, China.
Luzhanska made a bright start to the match as she took 1-0 set score lead with in first f40 minutes of the match. Although she lost the track a bit in the second set, she finished strongly to move ahead at the Women’s Tennis Association tournament.
Jovanovski had her chances during the contest but she was outclassed in the finer details of the game. The Serbian was on her way a superb victory, when she led 5-4 with a break of serve in the final set.
However, she failed to handle the pressure as she allowed her opponent an entry back into the match. Ranked 56th in the world, Jovanovski will be certainly disappointed with the result. Despite making strong comeback in the second set, she was unable to lift her game when it mattered the most.
Looking for a place in the second round of the tournament, Luzhanska had an ideal start to her match against a very high profile player; Bojana Jovanovski. Making it all look very simple, the Ukrainian broke the serve twice to take a crucial 4-2 lead. The two women broke each other at regular intervals in the set but it was Luzhanska held her nerves to clinch the opener 6-3.
Jovanovski raised her game to very high level in the following set. Holding on to her service games without too much trouble; she gained some kind of momentum in the match. Breaking her opponent twice, she earned an impassable lead and she converted the second set point to force the match into the decider.
The contestants put up a great fight in the final set as highly competitive tennis was witnessed. After both players traded several serve breaks, the set went into a tie-breaker. With her rock solid defence, Luzhanska clinched the tie-breaker 7-4 to seal a memorable victory.
