Texans position new signee Delhomme as No. 2 quarterback, T.J. Yates to start – NFL News
Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak has said that their new signee veteran Jake Delhomme will work as a backup of their newly elevated quarterback Taylor Jonathan (T.J.) Yates.
T.J. Yates has backing of their injured quarterback Matt Schaub, who has been ruled out of rest of the current National Football League (NFL) season due to foot injury.
Yates who took over Matt Leinart in last game after Leinart was forced out due to a collarbone injury. Now he has been endorsed to start in the Texans’ next game against the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday.
Yates had been drafted to the Texans side in 2011's draft season and has borne some promise to show-off his skills in the future.
The Texans meanwhile after exit of Matt Leinart in their last weekend's game have hired fulltime quarterback Jake Delhomme. The veteran Delhomme had announced retirement from the game after having played 10 consecutive seasons
in February this year, but later expressed a desire for comeback if a right team was available. This, according to the player, included the Houston Texans.
The Houston Texans also have a third choice for the quarterback position in form of Kellen Clemens. He had been signed by the Texans a couple of weeks ago.
All three players took part in full practice on Tuesday and Wednesday leaving a question mark; who will be starting at the quarterback position in their weekend's game.
Texans coach Gary Kubiak has now confirmed that T.J. Yates will continue to start for them in their next game this Sunday. They are hosting the National Football Conference (NFC) south leader.
Kubiak further made it clear that the new signee Jake Delhomme will be their quarterback number two, backing up T.J. Yates. Kubiak's endorsement has come in light of the opinion from their injured star quarterback Matt Schaub.
He has backed the rookie for the quarterback position, replacing him and Matt Leinart.
Last couple of weeks had been very tough for the Texans as they lost their two key players at the starting positions due to injuries in a row. Matt Schaub was first to go due to his foot injury. He was followed then by Matt Leinart.
Leinart had been forced out on the sideline apparently for his shoulder injury. Later tests confirmed that the player had suffered a collarbone and was unlikely to be available for rest of the current season.
