Texans say defence coach Wade Phillips in stable condition, recovering from surgery – NFL News
The Houston Texans said on Thursday that all was well with their defensive co-ordinator Wade Phillips after a surgery on his kidney and expected him to rejoin them in seven to ten days.
Phillips had been sent on a medical leave by the Texans after he had reported of his health issues, apparently some kidney and gall bladder problems, after their practice on past Wednesday.
The team management in a statement said that their defensive coach was in a stable condition after the surgery and his recovery timeline should not be more than ten days.
The management further said in the statement that the Phillips family had requested them to respect the player’s and his family privacy and refrain from giving further information on his health issue.
"In order to respect his privacy, the family has requested there be no further information given at this time," the Texans said in a statement.
Phillips had told his team of his health problems this week and was immediately released from his duties to get them fixed before end of National Football League (NFL) regular season.
He also had assured them that his kidney problem was not a life-threatening one, and expected to be back after his recovery in a week to ten days.
The 64-year old Phillips who has performed the defence coach duties at the Texans for a long time would be replaced be the team’s linebackers coach Reggie Herring for the first time.
Texans are playing the Carolina Panthers this weekend and it will Herring’s first game as a defensive coach this season.
The team management said a day earlier that they did not expect any changes from their make-shift coach assuring their players that Herring will start from where Phillips had left.
The defensive coach had been hired by the Texans in January this. He will be missing his first game this season. The Texans have been leading the NFL in defence with a record of 275 yards per game.
The Texans have been making headlines over about a month for injuries to their key players will be without their assistant coach in their next game this Sunday.
The team, which leads the American Football Conference (AFC) south division with 10-3 score, has already won the divisional title and made it to playoff this season.
