Texans sign veteran Jake Delhomme as new quarterback following Schaub, Leinart exit – NFL News
The Houston Texans seemed to have finally managed to find some solution to their quarterback problem following exit of Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart due to their season-threatening injuries, as they announced to have signed Jake
Delhomme.
The Texans had said on Tuesday that Delhomme was joining them in their practice session. However, the latest reports confirmed that they have given preference to the veteran player over other choices available. He will be starting
for at quarterback position.
Texans coach Gary Kubiak said that he was excited to have added Delhomme as their replacement for quarterback position, adding that he will "fit in perfectly with what we were looking for."
"He's a leader and a good person," Kubiak said. "He's played in big games. He's got West Coast (offense) verbiage in his background. He was so upbeat about coming here. He showed good arm strength. I was impressed. He's just a
very impressive guy."
Delhomme, 36, has played 10 consecutive seasons before retiring last year. He played four games for the Cleveland Browns last year but then gave it away to quarterback Colt McCoy. He has thrown for total 20,764 yards during his
career.
He said that he was still interested to decide about comeback but for only few teams. This included the Houston Texans.
Delhomme's agent Rick Smith meanwhile said that he did not know at what position his client had been signed, No.2 or No. 3 on the team depth.
"Gary runs a very quarterback-friendly system," said Smith. "It's a great offensive system, and quarterbacks, they love it."
The Texans have lately suffered a setback at quarterback position. First their key starter Matt Schaub had been ruled out for rest of current season because of his foot injury. A surgery on his foot is expected this week. He however
is unlikely to recover timely to play this season.
In the following week his replacement had been forced out on the sideline because of a collarbone injury. He too has become doubtful for rest of current season. He only managed a half-hour game before being ruled out.
Following their exit, the Texans were working on a number of options, including switching T.J. Yates at quarterback position. Despite that Yates had backing from Schaub, the Texans have given preference to signing a new quarterback,
Delhomme.
