Texas A&M Aggies down Texas A&M-CC Islanders 56-43: NCAA Basketball
A dominant first half enabled the Texas A&M Aggies beat the Texas A&M-CC Islanders 56-43 win on Saturday night at the Reed Arena, College Station, TX.
Elston Turner was the top scorer for the Aggies with 14 points and three rebounds. Guard Jordan Green also added 10 points, provided six assists and grabbed four boards during his 30 minutes stay on the court.
Apart from offense, the Aggies displayed tremendous defensive play and forced the Islanders to just 17.6 percent from beyond the arc and 27.8 percent from the field goal range. Aggies meanwhile shot 44.2 percent from the field
and 42.9 percent from the three-point region.
"We didn't come in here ready," Ray Turner said. "Their team came in here and kept fighting, and we let ourselves down by not being ready mentally and physically."
The Aggies didn’t waste any time and straight away got into the action by putting the first points on board with the help of Ray Turner’s jump shot. This led to a 14-4 surge and midway through the first half, the Aggies were leading
by 16-4. Turner shot two threes in that rally.
The Islanders then gathered themselves and limited the Aggies from driving to the rim for almost four minutes, but that strategy didn’t last long as the Islanders offense failed to make much difference in the score (18-8).
Wheels started turning for the Aggies, as Turner once gain got into action by launching another long range missile, to make it 21-8. From there on wards, Jordan Green and company took over the charge and allowed the Aggies to secure
the first half with 14-point lead (30-16).
When the teams returned after halftime, the Aggies started from where they left off and slowly kept on extending their lead. On the other hand, the Islanders didn’t show any spark until the game entered the final 12 minutes. Guard
Hameed Ali keyed a 14-1 run at that point as the Islander cut the deficit down to just six points (45-39).
However, Turner once again swung the pendulum toward the Aggies, as he single handedly tallied the next eight points for his team, stretching the advantage to 52-40.
"We were lethargic at the start and had a wait-and-see attitude," Islanders coach Willis Wilson said. "The thing we have to improve on most is shooting the basketball."
Forward Myron Dempsey led the Islanders with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Apart from Dempsey, the rest of the squad failed to put up a good show.
