How much does it cost you (in TX) for a small square bale (about 60lbs) of premium quality horse hay for:

- Coastal Bermuda

-Timothy

-Alfalfa

What about hays such as orchard grass, brome, or clover mix?

This is for a project I'm doing on different types of hay and I need to know the availability, cost, and pros/cons. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Go to your newspaper's classified ads and go to the farm section.  Round bales usually are the equivalent of 20 square bales.

  2. I've found that good hay, small bales are a lot cheaper in the field in that area, you might want to go that route..Oh, by the way, are you the owner of Classic Carriages in Ft. Worth?  Just curious.

  3. I live in Central Texas. Timothy bales are running around $8.50 average at the feed store, while coastal is running an average of $8.25. Alfalfa depending on 3 strand or two string bales run anywhere from $11-20 depending on the dealer.

Now to pick out of the field you can get a pretty decent price and you also get to see the quality before you pick. Most farmers are letting people pick up timothy and coastal on average of $3.50-$4.50 a bale. In Memphis, Texas you can pick a nice green alfalfa bale out of the field for around $5.50 a bale.

As for getting hay and alfalfa shipped in from out of state, depending on quality you are going to pay any where from $210-260 A TON to get a nice quality alfalfa shipped in from Nebraska, Wyoming, or Colorado. You can also get some grass mix such as brome or timothy/alfalfa shipped for around $170 A TON.

  4. I feed bermuda. mine cost ususally areound 7.50. though i just found some for 5.50, that i'll be getting.
