Texas Longhorns’ Mack Brown unhappy with record
Texas Longhorns head coach Mack Brown is unhappy with his club’s 4-3 record this season and attributes the poor play to an overall feeling of entitlement.
Brown notes that the team has a great deal of talent, but does not seem to have the drive necessary to win.
Brown spoke about his team’s lack of focus and the sense of entitlement. “I do think there’s some entitlement with this team. They sit around thinking it’s just going to happen,” said the veteran coach. “They played hard, but I mean [play] with passion,
fun and excitement. It’s all about confidence and passion. I can handle a loss if we are playing with passion. I can’t if we’re not.”
The final straw seemed to come when the squad lost an embarrassing game at home to the Iowa State Cyclones on 23 October. Iowa State topped Texas by a touchdown, winning 28-21. The win brought Iowa State back to even and helped them earn third in the Big
12’s North division.
In addition, the loss also marked the second loss in a row at home, in Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, generally a fortress for the Longhorns.
Texas has been on a slow slide since they suffered their first loss of the season in week four to the UCLA Bruins. The squad followed up their loss to the Bruins with a loss in the Red River Rivalry game to Oklahoma. The two losses moved the Longhorns out
of the AP Top 25. However, the next week they came back strong against a skilled Nebraska side, winning 20-13 and forcing their way into the Bowl Championship Series standings. Unfortunately, after the loss to the Cyclones the club was pushed back out of the
standings.
Texas next suits up against #25 Baylor on Saturday 30 October.
