Texas Rangers' efforts to add 'a unique offensive producer' – MLB News
The Texas Rangers’ general manager Jon Daniels stated on Wednesday, February 8, that the club had to consider the name of Prince Fielder when he was a free-agent in order to add a unique offensive producer.
His statement that came via email was to address the subject of Mitch Moreland. Considered to be an immeasurable part of the Texas Rangers’ offence, lost somewhere was the mention of Moreland when there was a lot of buzz about talks between the Rangers and
Prince Fielder.
"When you're talking about a guy like Prince, we had to at least consider it," Rangers’ general manager Jon Daniels wrote in an e-mail. "But it was more about adding a unique offensive producer than a lack of faith in Mitch. If he's healthy we like how he
fits the club."
Back in 2007, it was Daniels who decided to go for Mitch Moreland as first Draft pick. His choice was, as it gradually showed, a wise move. In years to come, all the players that Daniels picked exhibited phenomenally good performances, making palpable professional
growth.
While it might be thoroughly unfair to draw any parallel or comparison between Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland, as the former has exalted himself to a great position over the years, Mitch Moreland also offers what the Rangers need in their offence.
"We're betting on him bouncing back," Daniels wrote. "He's got the ability to shrink the strike zone and put up consistently quality [at-bats]. His defense and his work against lefties are areas we want him to improve on, but he's got the type of work ethic
that makes us think he will."
Wrist injury has plagued the player as Mitch Moreland has an average of .280 in the past season with .865 OPS.
However, the recent contract that the club has with Moreland will for now hush the debate over why the Rangers should not have gone for extensive talks with Prince Fielder. It is indeed upon Moreland now as he proves that the Rangers made the right choice
as far as taking charge of the offence is concerned.
