Texas Rangers Andy Hawkins’ happy with Yu Darvish’s workout
The Texas Rangers bullpen coach Andy Hawkins said on Saturday, March 17, that Yu Darvish’s Saturday’s pitching workout was good as he located all of his off-speed pitches very well. Yu Darvish is bracing himself for the first ever Major League Baseball season of his career.
"It looked very smooth and he located all of his off-speed pitches very well," Rangers bullpen coach Andy Hawkins said. "He located his fastball better today, and that's something that was of concern to him. He looked good."
Cameras eagerly followed this extraordinary pitcher as he made his way into the Texas Rangers. While a lot of teams were aspiring to get their hands on him, it was the Rangers that won the final bid to induct him in the club.
With the challenges abound, along with the excitement that invariably comes with such a big opportunity, Darvish has a long way to go. His start for the Rangers, however, has to be of considerable force.
As things have moved so far, Darvish is indeed doing well. His Saturday’s session served as its example. Hawkins alluded to this aspect while he commenting on Darvish’s workout.
"His fastball command hasn't been quite where he wants it to be and quite where we want it to be," Hawkins said. "But again, that just puts him with a lot of big league pitchers halfway through camp. There are guys still working on things and so is Yu."
He has so far pitched in two games of the Cactus League. Both have remained fine for the pitcher. Of the five innings that he has pitched so far in both the games, he has allowed two runs with six strikeouts that went to his credit.
Similarly, he will have another opportunity to show his talent and mettle on Monday when the team will take on the Milwaukee Brewers. Darvish is expected to throw at least four innings that will also determine how prepared he is for the regular season.
It will therefore be intriguing to see how Darvish pitches on Monday against one of the strongest hitting lineups in the game.
