Texas Rangers CEO, Nolan Ryan, talks on club development and market player selection
The Texas Rangers are through to the World Series for the second straight time in two years. They will now face the St. Louis Cardinals and they will be trying to do one thing that they failed to do last year when they were at this same stage: win. Texas
CEO, Nolan Ryan, took the opportunity to reflect on the player selection process at the club on Sunday, October 16 in the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
The former Texas pitcher spoke about the club’s progression through the American League as an ordinary team to the best team, for the second year running. Many sceptics claimed the Texans had Cliff Lee to pitch the squad to the World Series in 2010; however
this year has proved otherwise.
"Our philosophy is building from within our system," club president Nolan Ryan said. "That's the way we're going to stay. If we have a specific need, somebody we think fits, we'll certainly consider trying to do that. My thought is that we'll continue on
the course that we are, and that's from within our system."
Adrian Beltre and Mike Napoli were brought in to the club and they have done enormously well in the regular season and the postseason. During the regular, they managed to steer home 62 homes, 180 RBIs and 154 runs, collectively. However when one looks at
the pitching rotation, there are new faces in the form of Matt Harrison and Derek Holland.
Both pitchers had earning runs averages below 4.00 and both pulled up 30 wins for the team, collectively in the 2011 regular season. There has been no focus on one side than the other. The mix of new players from within and outside the club has established
a Dedicated Team dimension under the managerial influence of Ron Washington.
"We have the same goal," Ryan said. "We talk about what our needs are and how do we fulfil those needs. We don't always agree on things, but we do agree on trying to improve the ballclub."
The Texas President continued to talk about the process clarifying that there is a scouting department present that the club puts a lot of interest in. Also, heavy weight is laid on the beliefs of the development team and their findings. He concluded by
saying that he and general manager Jon Daniels are not the only people making the critical decisions. Rather there is a plethora of people involved.
