Texas Rangers’ Yu Darvish gets support from team after stir – MLB News
The Texas Rangers’ manager Ron Washington on Thursday, March 8, dismissed any suggestion that involved asking Yu Darvish for demonstrating some humility. The young Japanese pitcher who has recently joined the Rangers had issued a statement that was not particularly
seen in the best way.
After pitching in his first game in the Cactus League against the San Diego Padres, Yu Darvish had commented that Will Venable, the Padres’ pitcher, had barely barreled up a 92-mph fastball.
With the kind of limelight that Yu Darvish enjoys these days; his statement was interpreted differently, some even attributing it to arrogance. Nonetheless, when Ron Washington was asked if he will advise humility for Darvish, he said he likes the pitcher
the way he is.
"I'd like for Yu to be Yu," Washington said. "If that's Yu and that's what he feels, say it. I'm not gonna take that away from him. As far as Venable goes, he said what he felt like he had to say. And now we move on."
Yu Darvish, who is not familiar with the English language much will have to rely on the translator for now. Nonetheless, the stir he caused will dissipate as it is the popularity of the player that will witness a rise in times ahead.
As for the team manager, he finds this episode as the growing confidence of the player.
"He showed some confidence in himself and that's a good thing," Washington said of Darvish. "I believe Venable knows what happened right there. He hit the ball off the center-field wall. Whether he didn't get it or not, that's up to Venable to decide."
Darvish will remain the focus of the camera and close scrutiny of commentators, writers, detractors and fans as he adjusts himself to the new environment. It is beyond doubt that the Rangers have pinned enormous hopes on this exceptionally talented pitcher.
What remains to be seen now is if Yu Darvish avoids any controversy now. However, the fact that he finds the team management standing firmly behind him, Darvish will exude more confidence and resilience both inside and outside the field.
