Texas Rangers’ Yu Darvish wins applause –MLB Update
The Texas Rangers No.4 starter, Yu Darvish, on Tuesday April 10, won applause for his debut win against the Seattle Mariners. The anticipated game saw the young Japanese pitcher made a shaky start in the Major League Baseball debut, but held his nerve and won the victory at the end.
He became the first Texas Rangers pitcher since 1910 who has won any debut game despite having given up four runs in the very first inning. It was Bill Steele – a St. Louis Cardinals player, who had last attained this distinction with having conceded five in the first inning. During the decades that ensued, no player could break his record until Darvish entered the scene.
The team manager Ron Washington had his insight to share about it. The Texas Rangers starter, who had five strikeouts to his credit, having surrendered five runs along with eight hits in just over five innings, is expected to do better in the games ahead as season proceeds.
"The only thing I can say is it's not how you start, it's how you finish," Manager Ron Washington said. "He finished strong. He could have easily thrown in the towel, but he didn't. He fits in well with this clubhouse because we never throw in the towel. I do feel it will get better."
In the team manager’s view, it is all about battling. The last time any Texas Rangers pitcher had won the debut game was Paul Mirabella which was in the year 1978, when the starter threw against the Chicago White Sox.
"You keep battling and we'll get back in the ballgame," Washington said. "For his first time, maybe that's an experience he needed. To see what he did, to take the baseball and get into the sixth inning, I was proud of him. He knows we were behind him.”
The experience that Yu Darvish had here will help him a great deal to pitch more effectively and confidently in the upcoming games. The Rangers, after all, have great expectations from the rotation to help the team win the very first World Series title in the franchise’s history.
