Texas Rangers batter the Yankees to go to the World Series
When the New York Yankees were facing a resurgent competitor in the American League Championship, there was always going to be a certain level of uncertainty prevailing in the match up. The East side Wild card berth winners were going up against the Texas
Rangers, who have been at the peak of their game in recent days. The West division leaders welcomed the reigning World Series champions to their home ground of Rangers Ballpark. Apart from the ecstatic ambiance that surrounded the fixture, there was a tally
to consider which was going in favour for the home team.
The Rangers needed a win to go through to the finals and with a wins tally at 3 Texas – 2 New York, there was always going to be hard game on the hands of the Yanks. The hosts on the other hand, had two chances to go through and with Cliff Lee ready for
game 7 if the need came, the side was pumped up for the encounter.
Phil Hughes was pitching for the Yankees while Colby Lewis started for the Texans on the mound. Elvis Andrus was the first hitter to run home with the win and the Rangers batter got the run off Vladimir Guerrero. Alex Rodriguez equalized in the 5th
inning off Lewis’ wild pitch but that didn’t change the intent from the hosts. Vladimir’s double got Mitch Moreland and Josh Hamilton home for two runs.
As the Yankees’ bullpen fell out, Nelson Cruz of the Rangers prolonged the suffering by hitting a home run and getting Guerrero through for a run. The last 6th run eventually came when Ian Kinsler hit a sacrifice fly and got Michael Young through
to the dugout. The Texans had beaten the Yanks, 6 – 1 and with Lewis figures of 1.98 Earning Runs Average in 8 innings, the win was special.
Michael Young, being the longest Rangers longest squad member, was present to comment on the victory, “The World Series is coming to Texas. These fans have waited longer than we have. I know how bad we wanted it and they must have wanted it more.”
