Texas Rangers defeat Oakland Athletics 7-1 for second straight triumph – MLB Update
The Texas Rangers overpowered the Oakland Athletics 7-1 in the second straight game at the O.co Coliseum Stadium on Saturday, August 13 to take a 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
The Rangers batters and pitchers both played brilliantly to take their team into another dominating win over the rivals.
Starter Colby Lewis allowed his only run in the seventh inning to David DeJesus. Besides this, he allowed only three hits and walked none to punch out eight batters over his six innings. This dominating performance made him a winner for the eleventh time
in 2011 regular season. He now has 11-8 record with 4.01 ERA.
"Not giving them the momentum to start the game off ... it was big," said Lewis, who combined with four relievers on the five-hitter. "I don't know what the percentage is on that scoring but for me it was a big deal leaving a man on third base and keeping
the score 0-0 for a while."
Darren Oliver, Koji Uehara combined to complete the seventh without allowing further runs. Mike Adams and Neftali Feliz each remained scoreless over their single innings spells to get the Rangers into their 68th win of the season.
The Rangers’ batting awakened in the sixth inning with an RBI single of Ian Kinsler to left field against the starter Trevor Cahill, who was otherwise enjoying a scoreless game. Mike Napoli hit to left-field taking the second run of the game against Cahill.
Then short-stop Elvis Andrus and Josh Hamilton each scored an RBI single in the eighth inning to take the score to 4-1.
"That let us know right there he had his stuff," Washington said. "He did a great job out there. He and (Trevor) Cahill locked horns for five innings, and then in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth we put runs up."
Michael Young followed them with his RBI single in the eighth and then Ian Kinsler scored the final run in the ninth inning.
Cahill gave four runs on seven hits, and struck-out four batters in just over seven innings. He lost his eleventh game of the season, in which he has 9-11 record with 3.92 ERA. Brian Fuentes gave a single run but Fautino De Los Santos remained scoreless.
Craig Breslow gave away two runs in one inning spell.
