Texas Rangers edge past New York Yankees, 7-5: MLB Recap
Michael Young homered in the first and added an RBI single later in the inning, as the Texas Rangers took a 7-5 victory over the New York Yankees, on Saturday night, May 7.
Young finished 4-for-4 for Texas, who lost the opening game of this three-game series 4-1, on Friday. The Rangers secured a victory for just the third time, in their previous ten contests.
Young, while speaking after the game, said, “Our record isn’t what we want right now but I’m proud of the way our team’s battling. We are taking a good team approach offensively right now. If we keep doing that we’re going to be fine. Personally, I feel
fine, but never satisfied.”
Mitch Moreland had three hits and scored two runs, while Julio Borbon knocked in three runs for the Randers.
Texas starter, Derek Holland allowed four runs and walked five batters in his three-plus innings. Brett Tomko surrendered one hit and gave up a homer by Nick Swisher, just under three quarters of action. Arthur Rhodes (1-1) registered the last two outs in
the sixth inning, to seal the victory.
Darren Oliver, who replaced Rhodes, threw two score-less innings. Neftali Feliz, who returned after a stint on the disabled list, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his sixth save of the year. Feliz had not pitched since April 20, due to his right shoulder
inflammation.
Robinson Cano collected a three-run triple for the Yankees, who have dropped four of five games. In spite of the defeat, Derek Jeter set a MLB record of 2,303 games at shortstop, for the same team.
Bartolo Colon scattered nine hits and allowed five runs in a 4 1/3-inning start for New York. Boone Logan (1-2) yielded two runs in one inning, to absorb the defeat.
Yankees manager, Joe Girardi, said, “(Colon) was just in the middle of the plate more. He didn’t have his great stuff and that’s going to happen from time to time. This is a good hitting team and if you miss in the middle, they’re going to hurt you.”
Young hit a solo shot in the opening inning that cleared the 14-foot wall on the left, for a home run. It was Young’s second homer this season. David Murphy then went deep to start a four-run second by Texas.
Moreland lined a one-out single to right-field and Chris Davis walked. Both runners scored on a triple by Borbon and then a sacrifice fly from Ian Kinsler, made it 5-0 for the Rangers.
New York countered with four runs in their next at-bat, after Russell Martin hit into a double play.
Jeter doubled high off the left-field, Curtis Granderson drew a walk and Mark Teixeira knocked in a run with a bloop single to centre. After Alex Rodriguez walked to load the bases, Cano’s triple into the left-centre gap got New York, within 5-4.
The Yankees equalised the game at 5 when Swisher hit a home-run off Tomko in the sixth, but Texas quickly restored their advantage in the bottom of the inning.
Moreland scored to put the Rangers up 6-5, before Borbon nearly beat the throw to first. Young then added a two-out RBI single later in the period, to seal the match 7-5 for Texas.
