Texas Rangers exterminate Detroit Tigers 15-5, Qualify for World Series – MLB update
Texas Rangers scored nine runs in the third inning to annihilate the Detroit Tigers 15-5 in Game 6 of the American League Division Series on Saturday, October 15 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington to seal the pennant and subsequently qualify for the World
Series.
Prior to this, the Rangers had not managed a pennant in their first 49 season and it was only last year that Texas qualified for the World Series for the first time, losing to San Francisco Giants in the end. This time, however, they will want to go a step
ahead and win the title.
Detroit’s offence made a decent effort to keep the team in contention, but it was the defence which proved to be the reason for failure. Max Scherzer pitched two scoreless innings for the Tigers, but then allowed six runs with just one out in the third.
Daniel Schlereth relieved Scherzer, but his stay lasted for just four pitches.
Manager Jim Leyland brought starter Rick Porcello on the mound in an attempt to halt the scoring spree, but to no avail. Porcello was unglued for two runs and managed just one out before Ryan Perry relieved him and finally completed the third inning.
Perry was immaculate in his spell, allowing just two hits and one run in 2.1 innings to keep the lead to six runs after Austin Jackson’s two-run homer had pushed the Tigers to a total of four runs. However, in an unexpected move, Leyland replaced Perry with
Brad Penny, who was smashed all over the ballpark by Rangers’ offence to virtually seal the game, scoring five runs to take the score to 15-4.
After lashing a home-run to right-field in the first inning, Miguel Cabrera unleashed his arms for a homer to opposite field in the eighth inning, but it proved to be of little help to the Tigers in the context of the game.
Shunning talks about disappointment with the team, Leyland said, "I don't think I've ever been prouder of a team than I am of this team. They gave everything they had."
Finally getting into their groove, the Rangers are now confident of winning the World Series, especially after last year’s disappointing result. They will either face St. Louis Cardinals or Milwaukee Brewers, depending on the result of NLCS, which the Redbirds
currently lead 3-2.
