Texas Rangers in negotiations with Yu Darvish – MLB Update
After losing free-agency pitcher, C. J. Wilson, the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, December 20, won a bid to negotiate with the eagerly-sought Japanese pitcher, Yu Darvish. Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters who owns Darvish has accepted the bid the Rangers had; which
is said to be around $51.7 million.
Commitment shown by the Texas Rangers to get the Japanese pitcher in the bullpen underscores the urgency the club has. One of the strong fixtures of the Rangers this past season was its pitching as the club made its way into the World Series finals.
With the reported bid of $51.7 million, the Texas Rangers will have time until the 18th of next month to proceed with the deal. If they fail to sign him during the negotiations, Darvish shall get back to the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, whereby
the Rangers won’t lose money.
For the Texas Rangers general manager, the news comes as an exciting one for the organisation. However, in the end, it will all depend on how successfully the negotiations are carried out to get the player in their fold. “This is just the first step in the
process, but an important one,” Daniels said. “It's one that we hope will lead to signing Yu Darvish to a contract, but we understand the negotiations are just beginning. Our ownership group went the extra mile to support us on this.”
Like suggested earlier, the Texas Rangers have devoted their focus to the bullpen right now. One of the setbacks it recently had was the departure of C. J. Wilson. Darvish’s induction, on the other hand, will be a harbinger of change.
“At this point, it's still a negotiation,” Daniels added. “To compare Darvish to other players is premature. It goes back to the fact that we are looking for any opportunity to improve our ballclub in the short-term and the long-term.”
Nothing can be said with certainty at this point in time. With the stakes much higher than was initially thought, the Rangers will indeed put concerted efforts to get Darvish to not only add strength to the bullpen, but also pave the way for a solidified
offence.
