Texas Rangers lose farm director Scott Servais
The Texas Rangers have retained all their coaches for the next season but on Friday, November 4, it was announced the club has lost its farm Director, Scott Servais to the Los Angeles Angels. Expecting to retain most of its top level management personnel,
the team has been hit hard by the departure of their role model in the organization. General Manager (GM) Jon Daniels represented the team’s sentiments at the wake of the news.
"Mixed emotions as we will miss him here, but excited for him taking on this new challenge," Daniels said. "Scott's been a big part of our success, not just on the development side, but overall. He's a good friend and a talented baseball man. Fortunately,
he helped put together an outstanding staff, so we're confident others will step up and we won't miss a beat. Our commitment to scouting and development does not change."
Scott Servais had been with the club since 2005 and he was the first man to come in to the side after Daniels was made GM. Though a succession planning module is present, the club is now looking closely on who should take over the vacant position. Such a
move has been thought out cautiously as the Farm is an important component of the Rangers’ player development program.
"I don't plan to speculate on how we might structure the department until we're ready to announce our decision there," Daniels said.
Servais was the senior director of player development and farm teams recorded a good tenure under his reign. Five of six clubs passed the playoffs challenge, moving to the next stage in three of the last four years. The farm clubs also went 431 – 332 in
the 2011 season, winning with a modest percentage of .565 and recording their third best performance in franchise history.
Servais is a former baseball catcher and his role as a farm director did not exclude him from passing on critical points to the senior players in the major league team. With the chapter with the Rangers closed, Texas will find it hard to replace him.
