Texas Rangers not fazed by C. J. Wilson deal – MLB News
As other teams kept showing their interest in securing the free-agent pitcher C. J. Wilson, the Texas Rangers stated on Tuesday that he remains the first choice among the pitchers to be included in the roster this year. But for that to happen, the Rangers
have to make an offer that influences Wilson’s decision.
If that (the deal) does not materialise, the team will look for other possibilities. Among other teams that are looking for Wilson are Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Washington Nationals and Miami Marlins.
But the Texas Rangers’ president Nolan Ryan commented that they truly believed in Wilson as a competitor and that the team was more familiar with him than anybody. However, the re-signing is something that for now holds no certainty.
The Rangers’ manager Ron Washington is convinced of what Wilson has to offer is complete professionalism and versatility. However, much as that the pitcher can bring, what first needs to be done is to complete the process.
"He brings professionalism," Rangers’ manager Ron Washington said. "He's a guy that's very versatile, he takes the ball every single day. But like I said, even the signing of C.J. is a process.”
He is of the view that the process has to play out prior to signing a deal with the pitcher.
“You don't get this opportunity that often as a player -- where you can go out there and make yourself available. You have to let the process play out, and at the end of the day, I think the decision is going to come down to where C.J. wants to be."
A look at this year’s record of Wilson testifies to his brilliance. Having won 16 games in the 34 starts that he made, he maintained an ERA of 2.94 with 223 innings that he pitched.
All the same, his this year’s performance was in effect, a highlight of what he did in 2010 for the Texas Rangers with a 3.38 ERA, winning 15 games in 33 starts. With such consistency, he holds a great chance to secure a place in any team which wants a powerful
pitching line-up, chief among whom will be the Rangers.
