Texas Rangers not looking for any other big deal now – MLB News
The Texas Rangers’ general manager Jon Daniels almost ruled out on Wednesday, January 18, that the club would pursue free-agent Prince Fielder considering the budget constraints that the team now has. He said it’s ‘very unlikely’ that the Rangers will pursue
the matter now.
The club, instead, now wants to focus on the bullpen. The rotation is important for them. This is the reason why their aggressive pursuit for Yu Darvish. He also said he will not be able to predict anything during the season.
"After going through this process (referring to Yu Darvish’s multimillion dollar deal), I'm intimately familiar with our budget," Daniels said. "It's very unlikely."
What creates some kind of constraint for the Rangers here is indeed the sum of money involved in signing Prince Fielder. With the money they have injected in buying the players to complete the roster, it will not be easy to invest more. The Rangers are fully
aware how expensive a big name player like Fielder can cost, something that seems out of reach for now.
"I don't expect we'll do anything really big the rest of the winter," Daniels said. "But we'll get the next few days under our belt, welcome Yu to Texas and then take a step back and look at things."
The Texas Rangers has remained unlucky for two consecutive years to win the World Series finals where they were faced with the San Francisco Giants in 2010 and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011, something they do not want to repeat any more.
For them, to achieve the long elusive target, it is important to go for depth in their rotation. That is a strategy that will pay off for them. Thus, naturally, Prince Fielder may not be a big option for now.
"Our full intention is to go into Spring Training with depth in our rotation," Daniels said. "You're going to need more than five guys."
Whatever the end result of the reflections that the team has had lately over the induction of new players, Prince Fielder will certainly be a strong force for the Rangers in case he can make his way out into the final 40 of the roster.
