Texas Rangers not trying to trying to use Neftali Feliz in bullpen for just saves
Manager Ron Washington recently had the chance to talk to the press in Arlington, following a clean sweep series against the Boston Red Sox. The skipper was willing to answer a few questions being raised by the press. While speaking to the press, Washington went on to affirm that closer Neftali Feliz, will not be spared in a fixture if an official save opportunity does not come up.
So far, the closer has thrown in two games and suffice to say, none of them presented a situation in which his abilities could be utilized for a win. In order to pick up a save, the hurler needs to have a minimum three-run lead. Unfortunately, all two situations have come up with four-run leads. Nevertheless, Washington is unconcerned about that fact especially, when it is the Boston Red Sox on the cards.
"I'm trying to win a ballgame," Washington said. "I don't want all h**l to break loose and can't stop it. I'm trying to win a game and it's against the Boston Red Sox. I'm trying to say: 'You ain't coming back. Get that out of your mind.'"
In 70 games, last year, Feliz faced 43 save opportunities. The rest, either went for ties, or were not cleared for saves.
"The only thing I want to do is help my team win," Feliz said. "Even if it's not a save situation, I've still got to get people out and do the best I can."
However, if the hurler wants more chances, then he would be wishing for less hitting from the Rangers’ line up.
"No, no, no," Feliz said. "I want them to keep hitting because we need to be winning. It doesn't matter if it's a save situation."
Whatever the case may be, Feliz is itching to go and so are the hitters in the lineup. Nelson Cruz already has four home runs from four games and he is looking dangerous in the lineup. It may take a while before the closer gets his chance.
